Somatosensation Flashcards
Somatosensation
Refers to the sensation of the body and its
movements
Includes discriminative touch, deep pressure, cold, warmth, pain, itch, tickle and the position and movement of the
joints
Somatosensory Receptors
Suppose you suffer a cut through the spinal cord on the
right side only. For the part of the body below that cut, will
you lose pain sensation on the left side or the right side?
Will you lose touch sensation on the left side or the right
side
you will lose pain sensation on the left side of the
body because pain information crosses the spinal cord
at once. You will lose touch sensation on the right side
because touch pathways remain on the ipsilateral side
until they reach the medulla.
Pacinian Corpuscle
A type of touch receptor that detects
sudden displacement or high-frequency
vibrations on the skin
why can’t we Tickle ourselves
The reason we cannot tickle ourselves is that our brain compares the resulting stimulation to the “expected” stimulation and generates a weaker somatosensory response
Somatosensorial in (CNS)
Information from touch receptors in the head enters the CNS through the cranial nerves
In what way is somatosensation several senses instead
of one?
We have several types of receptors, sensitive to
touch, heat, and so forth, and different parts of the
somatosensory cortex respond to different kinds of
skin stimulation
