What is Somatic Symptom Disorder?

A

Significant focus is on physical symptoms, like pain, which cause major emotional distress and problems functioning. Excessive thoughts, feelings, or behaviours related to the somatic symptoms, demonstrated by persistent thoughts about the seriousness, high levels of anxiety, or excessive time and energy devoted to these symptoms

What differentiates Somatic Symptom Disorder from other anxiety disorders?

A

Unlike acute symptoms in anxiety disorders, the main source of fear/anxiety in Somatic Symptom Disorder is not the symptoms themselves but the associated health concerns

what is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

A

Presence of obsessions (repeated, persistent and unwanted thoughts) and compulsions that are intrusive and cause distress. The obsessions or compulsions are time-consuming (more than 1 hour per day) or cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning

What differentiates Obsessive-CompulsiveDisorder from other anxiety disorders?

A

It can be differentiated from other anxiety disorders by not just the thoughts that are experienced as intrusive or unwanted but the ritualistic behaviours that follow that won’t be seen in other anxiety disorders

What is PTSD

A

Exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence, leading to a specific set of stress responses. Presence of intrusion symptoms, avoidance with the traumatic event, negative alterations in cognition and mood, and marked alterations in arousal and reactivity

What is the difference between PTSD and acute stress disorder?

A

Differentiated by the duration of symptoms. The symptom criteria is exactly the same but stress disorder presents with symptoms up to 4 weeks following the event. PTSD must have symptoms persist at least 4 weeks to be diagnosed.
