mental disorder with symptoms suggesting physical injury that cannot be explained by a medical condition NOT due to malingering
somatoform disorder
chronic condition in which pt has physical sx involving 1 or more part of the body but NOT PHYSICAL CAUSE FOUND.
somatization disorder
preoccupation with the fear or belief one has a serious, undiagnosed disease (despite reassurance)
illness anxiety disorder - usually age 20-30, tend to ‘doctor-shop’ with increase use of OTCs/herbals
3 subtypes: pain disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, undifferentiated
managed with group therapy
clinical manifestations of anorexia nervosa
BMI
diagnosis of anorexia nervosa
vital signs: emaciated, hypotension, bradycardia, skin/hair changes (lanugo), dry skin, salivary gland hypertrophy, amenorrhea
labs: CBC: leukocytosis, leukopenia, anemia, hypokalemia, increased BUN (dehydration), hypothyroidism, arrhythmias
management of anorexia nervosa
- hospitalization for
major difference between patients with bulimia nervosa vs. anorexia nervosa
bulimia nervosa patients are normal weight or even overweight
management of bulimia nervosa
- psychotherapy: CBT
2. pharmacotherapy: fluoxetine has been shown to reduce binge-purge cycle (but may have cardiovascular side effects)
childhood disorder: persistent pattern of negative, hostile, and defiant behavior towards adults. BLAMES OTHERS
oppositional defiant disorder

- angry/irritable mood
- argumentative/defiant behavior
- vindictiveness
management of oppositional defiant disorder
behavioral therapy. no association with psychosis
duration of short attention span and easy distractibility for ADHD to be diagnosed
> 6 months
childhood disorder: social and academic difficulty: lack of guilt/remorse, defias authority (causes fights, throws tantrum, fails in schools, SETS FIRES, STEALS, CRUEL TO PEOPLE/ANIMALS, sexually uninhibited
conduct disorder –> poor prognosis (40% develop anti social personality disorder. MC in boys)
