Solutions, Dilutions and Body Fluids Flashcards
Tonicity?
the ability of an extracellular solution to make water move into or out of cell by osmosis
4 main properties of water?
- polarity
- adhension
- cohesion
- surface tension
Whats a solution?
a solution is composed of a solvent and solute
What is a solute?
the minor component of a solution which is dissolved
What is a solvent?
the major component of solution which is present in the greatest amount
Electrolytes and solutes?
electrolytes are molecules that ionise completely in a solution and therefore conduct electricity
Non-electrolytes and solutes?
non-electrolytes do not ionise in solutions and therefore do not conduct electrical activity
A saturated solution?
contains the maximum amount of solute that will dissolve at that temperature
A unsaturated solution?
contains less than maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in that temperature
Relate properties of gases to pressure, volume and temperature?
at constant temperature, the volume of a fixed amount of a gas is inversely proportional to its pressure
