Acids and Bases Flashcards
1
Q
What is an acid?
A
An acid donates protons and accepts electrons (proton donor)
2
Q
What is a base?
A
bases are substances that release hydroxide ions (proton acceptor)
3
Q
Process of neutralisation?
A
results in excess hydrogen or hydroxide ions present in solution
4
Q
Buffer system?
A
a solution which resists a change in pH when acids or bases are added
5
Q
Describe how carbonic acid and bicarbonate buffer work in blood?
A
carbon dioxide is dissolved in blood where its taken up by RBC’s and converted into carbonic acid which then dissociates to bicarbonate and hydrogen ions
