Solutions and mixtures Flashcards
Heterogeneous mixture
Example
Different throughout/ no consistency
Bowl of fruit loops
Sand in bottle of water
Mixture
Combination of any substances
Homogeneous mixture
Example
Uniform throughout Water Pure air Laundry detergent Vinegar
Solution
A mixture in which one or more substances (solutes) are distributed evenly in another substance (solvent.)
Alloy
Solid solution (does not have to be clear)
Is pure air a solution?
Yes, dust particles not included
Can your see particles in a solution?
No, the solution is at the molecular level
Solution volume
The volume of the solution stays about the same as the initial volume of the solvent
Density
Volume stays the same but density increases
Tyndall effect
If a solution is true, when a light is shone on the solution the light will not have a clear pathway through because the particles in the solution will be too small to reflect.
Solute
Less of
Dissolved in solvent
Solvent
More of
A substance that dissolves a solute
Density equation
D=m/v
