Q

What is a suspension?

A

• Formed when an insoluble solid mixes with a liquid, and does not dissolve
• Suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures
○ Particles of the solid are quite large, and visible
○ This makes the suspension opaque (cloudy, not transparent)
○ The particles of solid will settle to the bottom over time
○ Suspensions are separated by filtration

Q

What is a colloid?

A
  • Colloids are hybrid solutions and suspensions
  • Colloids are heterogenous mixtures, where the particles are evenly distributed, but not dissolved
  • The particles are smaller than in suspensions, so do not settle out over time, they stay mixed
  • The particles scatter light so colloids are opaque (cloudy)
