Solution-focused Therapy Techniques - Formula First Session Task Flashcards
What is a Formula First Session Task?
This is homework that the client completes between their first and second session. It is generally used regardless of the clients issue and is designed to help the client increase their optimism and better understand their strengths.
What is the goal of the formula first session task?
The goal is to have the client focus on what is going well for them rather than focus on the problem.
Give an example of how a counsellor could suggest this task to a client.
“Between now and the next time that we meet, I would like you to observe, so that you can describe to me next time, what happens in your (family, life, marriage, relationship) that you want to continue to have happen.
How does the counsellor follow up the formula first session task in the second session?
By asking the client what they observed in their life and which things they would line to have continue to have happen.
How does the formula first session task help the client?
It helps the client realise that they are already doing a number of positive things in their life and they have a number of strengths and resources that can assist them in tackling their “problem” situation.
What type of client most benefits from the formula first session task?
It is particularly useful for those clients who report feelings of hopelessness in tackling their ‘problem’ and also for clients who are unable to fully ‘pin-down’ what their preferred future looks like
Does the formula first session task project optimism?
Yes. It projects optimism and a sense of hope that change is inevitable. It is not a matter of ‘if’ change will occur, but ‘when’ it will happen.
