WATER
Extracts acids, alkaloids, bitter compounds, flavonoids, glycosides, gums, minerals, mucilage, polysaccharides, tannins, and for a short term, volatile oils.
ALCOHOL
Extracts acids, alkaloids, bitter compounds, flavonoids, polysaccharides, resins, some vitamins and minerals, tannins, volatile oils, and many other plant chemicals, but precipitates out mucilage.
GLYCERIN
Extracts bitter compounds, glycosides, polysaccharides, saponins, tannins, vitamins, and to a lesser extent, alkaloids and volatile oils.
VINEGAR
Extracts alkaloids, bitter compounds, minerals, polysaccharides, and tannins.
OIL
Extracts oleoresins, resins, volatile oils, and to a lesser extent, gums, mucilage, and tannins.
HERBAL TEA, WASH, COMPRESS, FOMENTATION
A Water-Based preparation is any herbal preparation that combines herbs with water. These preparation usually bein as an infusion or decoction (tea, wash, compress, fomentation, enema, etc.) depending on intended use. Water extracts phytochemicals from various parts of a plant, drawing these chemical constituents into the water itself.
