solubility curves Flashcards
definition of solute
substance that dissolves in a liquid to make a solution
definition of solvent
liquid that the solute dissolves in
definition of solubility
ability of a solute to dissolve in a solvent
saturated solution meaning
when no more of the solute cab dissolve in the solvent
how is solubility usually measured and example
grams of solute per 100 grams of solvent
e.g if 23g of a substance can dissolve in 100g of water before solution = saturated, that substance has a solubility of 23g per 100g of water
how can you use solubility curves to find the solubility of a substance at a specific temperature and example
1) draw a line from temp up to the curve (x-axis)
2) read across from it to y-axis
e.g 25 degrees is 32g per 100g of solvent
formula for calculating solubility
mass of solute dissolved / mass of water x 100
