alkali metals Flashcards
how are rubidium and caesium stored
in glass tubes
what is produced when group 1 metals burn in the air and how can you identify the metal
white metal oxides and by the colour of the flames
what is produced when alkali metals react in water
hydrogen gas and a metal hydroxide
why does the water turn purple after a alkali metal reaction
because the water becomes an alkaline
group 1 metals react ___________ when heated in a group 7 gas to form white ____________ salts called metal ________
vigorously, crystalline, halides
lithium+water —> _______ ________ sodium+water —> ______ _________
lithium hydroxide
sodium hydroxide
group 1 metals are held together by _______ bonds
metallic
why do melting and boiling points decrease as you go down group 1
the reactivity increases because the nucleus is further away from the electrons in the outer shell so less energy is needed to break the metallic bonds and turn the solid metal into a liquid then a gas.
state and explain the reactivity as you go down the group 1 metals
reactivity increases as you go down the group 1 metals because the outer electron is further away from the nucleus so the attraction between them is decreased therefore the electron can easily be lost
when lithium, sodium and potassium reacts with oxygen, what colour flame does it burn with and what does it leave
red, yellow orange, lilac
white powder/residue
