Solubility Flashcards
The substance that gets dissolved in a solution.
Solute
The substance that does the dissolving.
Solvent
What can be done to speed up the amount of time it takes to dissolve a solute?
A) increase the temperature (if the solute is a solid)
B) stir the solution
Why does stirring speed up the time it takes for a solid to dissolve in a liquid?
Why does increasing the temperature do the same?
In both cases, it makes the molecules move around faster to make them bump (collide) with one another.
Gases dissolve easier into liquids at (high or low) temps?
Low temps.
Why would a gas come out of solution at a higher temp? (Think about heating a can of soda.)
The liquid and gas molecules would move faster, causing the gas bubbles to escape from the liquid.
The word that means unable to dissolve.
Insoluble
solubility
The ability to dissolve, can be affected by temperature, pressure, and amount of solvent.
