Mixtures, Compounds And Elements Flashcards
Two or more elements(atoms) chemically combined to form a new substance with new properties.
Compound
A pure substance, the periodic table is a list of these substances.
Elements
A mix of elements or compounds that are not chemically combined. The parts can be separated by physical means.
Mixture
How can you separate a mixture of salt, sand, and iron filings?
Use a magnet to pull out the iron, then add water to dissolve the salt. Pour the sand, salt, and water through a filter to remove sand. Finally boil water and salt is left behind.
A certain kind of mixture that is the same throughout (homogeneous). Example: salt water, koolade.
Solution
H20, CO2, NaCl…
All are examples of (compound or element?)
Compound, because they are a combination a 2 or more elements together. (H, O, Na, Cl, C are all separate elements)
