Solubility Flashcards
What is solubility?
Solubility is the mass of a solid that will saturate 100g of water at a particular temperature
What is a saturated solution?
A saturated solution is one which no more solid will dissolve at a particular temperature
What is a solute?
A soluble substance which dissolves
What is a solvent?
A solvent is the liquid in which the solute dissolves
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture of solute dissolved in a solvent
What does insoluble mean?
A substance that will not dissolve in a particular solvent
What does the kinetic theory of dissolving say?
Particles in the solute become separated and become mixed with the solvent particles
What are the physical properties of water?
Colourless liquid, freezing point at 0 degrees, boiling point at 100 degrees
What is water used as a solvent in? (Two examples)
Drinks and washing
What is the equation of solubility?
Solubility (g/100g of water) = mass of solute / mass of solvent X 100
What does a rise in temperature do to the solubility of gases?
It decreases as the temperature increases
What does a rise in temperature do to the solubility of solids?
It increases as the temperature increases
What do you plot on the y axis of a solubility graph?
The solubility g/100g of water
What do you plot on the x axis of a solubility graph?
Temperature
