Neutralisation Flashcards
What is a base?
A substance that reacts with an acid producing salt and water (alkali)
Are alkalis soluble?
Yes, they are soluble bases
What are metal hydroxides?
Alkalis
What are metal oxides?
Bases
What is an indicator?
A chemical that gives a colour change in acidic, alkaline and neutral solutions
What colour is universal indicator in alkali
Purple
What colour is universal indicator in acid?
Red
What colour is phenolphthalein in alkali?
Pink
What colour is phenolphthalein in acid?
Colourless
What does metal and acid give?
Salt and hydrogen
What does an acid and alkali give?
Salt + water
What does an acid and metal carbonate give?
Salt+water+carbon dioxide
When is salt formed?
When some or all of the hydrogen ions in an acid are replaced my metal ions or ammonium ions.
What is hydrochloric acid’s salt?
Chloride
What is sulphuric acid’s salt?
Sulfate
What is nitric acid’s salt?
Nitrate
What is a salt name made up of?
A metal part and an ending depending on the acid used
What is neutralisation?
A reaction between an acid and an alkali producing salt and water
What are some examples of neutralisation?
Indigestion remedies, lime in acidic soil, baking powder on a bee sting, vinegar on a wasp sting
What pH are acids?
Between 1-6
What pH are alkalis?
8-14
What is a neutral pH?
7
