Q

What is solubility and how can you increase it

A

The amount of grams of solute that dissolves per 100g of solvent
Increasing temperature often leads to increased solubility for solid substances

Q

Describe how you can investigate the effect of temperature on the solubility of ammonium chloride

A

Make a saturated solution by adding an excess of ammonium chloride to 10cm^3 of water
Stir the solution and place the boiling tube in a water bath set to 25 degrees Celsius
After 5 minutes check the temperature and ensure the excess solid has sunk to the bottom
Weigh an empty evaporating basin and pour some solution ensuring no undissolved solid is poured in
Re-weigh the evaporating basin and gently heat using a Bunsen burner to remove water
Once all water has evaporated, pure ammonium chloride is left behind
Repeat the steps with different temperatures and use the masses to calculate solubility
Plot the results on a solubility graph
