- Cysts in the neck that occur due to localised haemorrhage

Aetiology/ Risk factors: What are the causes of solitary thyroid nodules? (5)
A
Causes:
- Cyst due to localised haemorrhage
- Adenoma (benign follicular tissue)
- Carcinoma
- Lymphoma
- Prominent nodule in multi-nodular goitre

Investigations: How do we investigate solitary thyroid nodules?
A
- Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) guided by ultrasound scanning
(FNAC on its own cannot distinguish between follicular adenoma and follicular carcinoma)

Treatment: How do we treat a solitary thyroid nodule?
A
- Thyroid lobectomy (surgical removal of the half of the thyroid gland that has the nodule)
