Solids, Liquids and Gases Flashcards
What are the three states of matter?
solid, liquid and gases
All materials are made up of what?
tiny particles
Which state you get - solid, liquid or gas - depends on what?
- material 2. temperature 3. pressure
Can you identify 5 properties of substances?
- volume 2. shape 3. density 4. compressibility 5. ease of flow
Can you identify 5 properties of solids
- definite volume 2. definite shape 3. high density 4. no compressibility 5. no ease of flow
Can you identify 5 properties of liquids
- definite volume 2. match the shape of the bottom of the container 3. medium density 4. no compressibility 5. flow easily
Can you identify 5 properties of gases
- no definite volume - fill the container 2. shape same as the container 3. low density 4. easily squashed 5. flow easily
The particles in a substance stay the same whether it is a …
soild, liquid or gas
What changes in the different states?
- particles energy 2. arrangement of the particles
Energy - solids, liquids and gases
solids - least energy liquids - medium energy gases - most energy
attraction - solids, liquids and gases
solids - strong liquids - medium gases - weak
Solids - position arrangement vibrate movement
- fixed position 2. regular arrangement 3. vibrate - yes 4. movement - no
In which state particles are closely packed together?
solids
In which state there are lots of particles in a small volume?
solids
Are the particles constantly moving in a liquid?
yes
Why gases have low density?
because there are few particles in a large volume
In which state particles move alot in all directions?
gas
Why is there gas pressure in a container?
because particles are hitting a surface with force
When you increase the temperature, what happens to the particles in a gas?
the particles gain more energy and move faster
When you increase the temperature, what happens to the pressure of the container? Why?
The pressure will increase because the particles will hit the walls harder and more often
What happens when you reduce the volume of the container with a gas inside? What will happen to the pressure?
The pressure will increase because the particles are squashed up in a smaller space, so they will hit the walls more often
Define diffusion
Diffusion is particles moving from higher concentration to lower concentration.

Why is smell diffusion slow?
Diffusion is slow because the smell particles keep bumping into air particles. which stops them making forward progress and often sends them off in a completely different direction.
What is particle theory?
The particles in a substance stays the same whether it’s a solid, a liquid or a gas. What changes is the arrangement of the particles and their energy.
