Extraction of metal ores Flashcards
Give the use and symbols for the following metals: Copper Nickel Gold Aluminium Iron
Copper (Cu) is used in wires. Nickel (Ni) is used in coins. Gold (Au) is used in jewellery. Aluminium (Al) is used in saucepans. Iron (Fe) is used in air crafts and bridges.
Do most metals exist on their own in the ground? Explain
Most metals are too reactive to exist on their own on the ground. Instead, the metals combine with other elements (oxygen or sulphur) and form compounds.
What are metal ores?
Metal ores are compounds on the ground e.g. Iron oxide
Name two pure metals which remain on their own in the ground
Pure metals are gold and silver.
Both gold and silver are extremely unreactive.
What does extract mean?
Extract means to take out something.
What does quarry mean?
A quarry means a place full of rocks
What are rocks containing metals known as?
Rocks containing metals are known as ores.
Why can you not usually see the metal in one of these rocks?
Because the metal combines with other elements and are compounds in the rocks.
Name the black powdery substance which is included in the reactivity series.
Carbon
When carbon is heated with iron oxide, what do you get as a result?
Iron + Carbon dioxide
Name a non metal in the reactivity series
Carbon
You can use carbon to extract copper or lead, but not calcium. Explain why!
Calcium is more reactive than carbon
A displacement reaction is not necessary to extract gold. Why?
Gold is unreactive and remains in its pure form.
Explain how to extract iron from iron ore
Iron oxide (iron ore) will react with carbon and the products will be iron plus carbon dioxide
Show the extraction method for the following metals: Potassium Sodium Calcium Zinc Copper Iron Gold Silver
Electrolysis: Potassium, Sodium & Calcium
Reacting with carbon: Zinc, Copper & Iron
Pure: Gold & Silver
