Solids Flashcards
1
Q
Metallic Solids
A
Solids held together by a delocalized “sea” of electrons. Can conduct electricity.
2
Q
Ionic Solids
A
Solids held together by ionic bonds. Usually very brittle.
3
Q
Covalent-Network Solids
A
Held together by covalent bonds. Can be extraordinarily strong, like diamond.
4
Q
Substitutional Alloy
A
When atoms of the solute in a solid position occupy positions normally occupied by a solvent atom. Occur when the solute and solvent atoms have similar atomic radii and chemical-bonding characteristics.
5
Q
Interstitial Alloy
A
When the solute atoms occupy interstitial positions in the “holes” between solvent atoms. Occurs when the solute atoms have MUCH smaller bonding atomic radius than solvent atoms.
