Solid Phases Flashcards
1
Q
Define amorphous
A
No order to how particles are arranged
2
Q
Define crystalline
A
Particles in highly ordered 3D arrangement
3
Q
Give examples of crystalline bonding types and their properties
A
- Covalent network - strong covalent bonds, high mpt, poor conductors e.g. diamond
- Covalent molecular - dispersion, soft, low mpt, poor conductor e.g. ice
- Metallic solids - delocalised electrons - sea of electrons, good conductors e.g iron
- Ionic solids - lattice structure, poor conductors, water soluble e.g. NaCl
