Porosity Flashcards
Define porosity accessibility
○ Open - connected to external surface allows passage of adsorbate
○ Closed - isolated void within solid, not connected to external surface
○ Transport - connect parts of external surface to inner micro porosity
○Blind - not isolated but not leading to other pores/surface
Define pores
· Pores are minute openings accessible to vapours and gases
=> have irregular shape in carbon and regular shape in zeolites
Does porosity interact with the adsorbate?
Not porosity that interacts directly with adsorbate but the internal surface of adsorbent
Define internal surface
Area surrounding closed pores as well as fissures and cracks which penetrate deeply into interior of adsorbent = deeper than wide
Describe external surface
Protrusions and superficial cracks = wider than deep
