Solid, liquids and gases Flashcards
describe the arrangement in solid liquids and gases
in solids they have a regular arrangement but in liquids and gases they have random arrangements
how do the particles move in soild liquids and gases
solids-vibrate liquids-move around gases-move quickly all directions
what are the forces of attraction in solid liquids and gases
solids-strong liquid-weak gases-very weak
what is diffusion
the process of substances spreading out from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
what is pressure
the gas pressure is cause by particles hitting against the surface
2 ways gas pressure can occur
increasing temperature-particles move more often and hit the wall harder
reducing volume-particles squashed to smaller space and hit the walls more often
what are the changes of state
solid melts to liquid, liquid boils/evaporates to gas, gas condenses to liquid, liquid freezes to solid, solid subliments to gas
process of melting boiling and subliming
substance heats up, particles gain energy, forces between particles weaken and particles break apart from position
process of condensing and freezing
substance cools down, particles lose energy, forces between particles get stronger and particles hold their position
a change of state doesnt change in mass but what changes
the energy
what happens to the energy when melted boiled and sublimed
its supplied
what happens to the energy when frozen and condensed
