Solar System And The Universe Flashcards
What are the three major functions of an astrological telescope?
Light-gathering power
Resolving power
Magnifying power
What are the seven types of electromagnetic waves?
Radio Microwave Infrared Visible Ultraviolet X-ray Gamma ray
Light-gathering power
How much light a telescope can gather. The primary purpose for large telescopes is the light gathering power
Resolving power
Ability to see sharp detail. Earth telescopes are limited by atmospheric disturbance which is why space telescopes have clearer images
Magnifying power
How many times bigger the image appears than it actually is. Nothing to enhance the quality of the image
What are the two basic types of telescopes?
Reflecting (uses mirrors) and refracting (uses lenses)
Because of engineering limitations on making large lenses, most astro telescopes are reflecting telescopes
What are the eight planets?
Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune
What are the two types of planets in our solar system?
Terrestrial (small balls of rock) MVEM and Jovian ( gaseous) JSUN
What is a nebula?
Large cloud of dust and gas. Origin of solar system
What causes the seasons?
The tilt of the Earth’s axis
During which phase of the moon can a lunar eclipse happen?
Full moon. Earth’s shadow falls in moon
During which lunar phase can a solar eclipse happen?
New moon.
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
Any change in velocity(speed and direction) requires an outside force
What is Newton’s second law?
Force =mass x acceleration
What is Newton’s third law?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
