Solar pannels
A
Absorb infrared radiation from the Sun. This radiation travels into pipes in the solar panel and heats up water directly. A pump is not needed as the water will move through the panel by convection. Even if it is a cold day we still get IR radiation from the Sun.

A
Absorbs visible light from the Sun and uses it directly to produce electricity due to a Quantum Mechanical Effect. Even on a cloudy day we still get some light from the Sun.
