soil properties and stress week3 Flashcards
what is soil a mixture of?
solid, liquid and gas
what is a soil?
any of the deposits forming the earths crust which isn’t solid rock
what are the different soil sizes?
silt, clay, sand, gravel, cobbles, boulders
what is meant by granular soil?
when the particles of the soil DO NOT stick together when being compressed
what is meant by cohesive soil?
when the particles of the soil stick together when being compressed
what is peat?
soil made up of organic/plant matter, contains a high moisture content (not good for construction)
what is soil mechanics?
the study of soil behaviour as an engineering material when a force is imposed on it
what do soil properties depend on?
particle types and moisture content
what is stress caused by?
an applied load and/or self weight
what the different principles of soil?
stress, pore water pressure, density and unit weight, moisture content
what is effective stress?
stress that passes through the soil skeletons
what is particle size distribution?
the range of particle sizes in the soil
what is plasticity?
the ability to deform without cracking
at what stage is soil behaving plasticly?
when the moisture conten is between the plastic limit and the liquid limit
what is the plasticity test called?
Atterberg limit test
