soil and plant nutrition Flashcards
what are organic compounds?
chemical compounds that contain carbon and plants get this from carbon dioxide
what are inorganic compounds?
they do not contain carbon, and are not part of or produced by a living organism - minerals
what are the big three essential plant nutrients?
nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium
what are the roles of the big 3 elements?
-nitrogen involved in growth of green leaves
-phosphorous involved in root growth, flower and fruit development
-potassium helps overall function of a plant, energy production, enzyme activation, and photosynthesis
what are some important macronutrients part 1?
-carbon required to form carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids
-nitrogen required to form proteins and nucleic acids
-h and o parts of many organic compounds, oxygen needed for cellular respiration
what are some important macronutrients part 2?
-cellulose makes plant cell walls and is most compound organic compound on earth
-potassium part of nucleic acids, ATP, phospholipids
-sulfur in some AAs
what are some important macronutrients part 3?
-potassium stoma opening and closing
-magnesium photosynthesis
-calcium enzyme function/ nutrient transport
what is the importance of iron presence?
iron important in electron transport in photosynthesis and respiration and chlorophyll synthesis
what are the types of soil components?
-organic material which is small plant residues and small living organisms, decomposing organic matter, and stable organic matter
-mineral material formed from weathered rock and is composed mainly of minerals
what is sustainable agriculture?
long term productive farming methods that are environmentally safe
what are some methods used in sustainable agriculture?
-irrigation
-controlling erosion
-fertilization
