Q

What is rigolith?

A
  • Unconsolidated material that lies over bedrock
  • May have formed in situ or been transformed by water or ice
  • soil is PART of the rigolith, and is usually the top part which contains a high density of organic material

7
Q

Why is parent material important?

A

Soils inherit structure and minerals from their parent material, and are often classified based upon their contents of consolidated or unconsolidated mineral material that has undergone some degree of physical or chemical weathering and the mode by which the materials were most recently transported.

A
  • soil mixing - worms
  • bacteria - nitrification/ oxidisation
  • breaking down of organic and inorganic matter
17
Q

Define catena.

A

Relationship of soils of similar age with varying characteristics due to variation in relief and drainage

18
Q

How long does it take soil to form?

A

45 - 75,000 years

19
Q

Describe British soils.

A
  • mostly less than 10,000 years old
  • limestone/ sandstone –> Cambisols
  • scotland –> glacial/ fluvioglacial deposits
20
Q

What are cambisols?

A

rich brown earths

21
Q

What is the difference between old and young soils?

A

Young soils = similar to parent material

Old soils = more influenced by climate
