What is softwood
sof wood is cheaper compared to hard wood. leaves keep all year round, sustainabe- grows much quicker than hardwood, better for transporting - less fumes, local. usually open /wide grain, light in colour
White Pine
Proporties - strong, reasonably durable, better suited for interiour use easy to work by both hand or machine, glues/ finishes
well
cost - inexpensive:
uses - crates, boxes, wooden matchsticks, roof rafters, carvings
Spruce
Properties - Small hard knots, not very durable , used for indoor use.
Costs - inexpensive
uses - white wood furniture used in bedrooms and kitchens
Red Cedar
Properties - reddish or violet brown, straight grain ,usually knots present, very fine even texture.
cost - inexpensive
Uses - fence posts , closet, carvings, birdhouse, pencils, bows
Parana pine
Properties- hard, straight grained, almost knot free, fairly strong /durable pale yellow colour with red/brown streaks.
Costs- inexpensive, more expensive as a soltwood but cheaper companed to handwood.
Uses - good quality knot free furniture such as doors and staircases
Cedar
Properties - soft and Lightweight, very durable - well suited to outdoor use
construction, redish /orange with a straight grain that is knot free
Costs - expensive as a softwood
Uses - garden shed, quality fencing, outdoor furniture, exteriour walls.
