ActiveX Controls
A set of commands and components that can be used by programmers to add interactive features to Web pages.
Antivirus Program
A utility program used to scan a computer’s memory and disks to identify, isolate and remove viruses.
Application
A program or group of programs designed to help the end user.
Application Software
Programs that help users perform a specific task, for example, word processing.
Artificial Intelligence
A characteristic of computers that exhibit human-like intelligence. A field of research that includes robotics, expert systems and speech recognition.
Automation
The use of electrical or mechanical devices to accomplish a task.
Backup
A duplicate copy of a file, disk or tape. Also refers to a Windows utility that allows you to backup and restore files.
Boot
To load the operating system that starts a computer.
Cold Boot
Starting a computer by switching it on.
Commercial Software
Copyrighted computer programs sold to buyers for profit.
Control Program
A program that enhances an operating system by creating an environment in which you can run other programs, for example, Windows
Copyright
A form of legal protection that grants exclusive rights to the owner to copy, sell, distribute and modify its software.
Data
Usually, information that has not been processed.
Database
A computer program that helps you manage large pieces of data.
Folder
An area created on a storage device, given a name and used to store files.
File
Stored information, such as a document, computer program or graphic, that is saved on a disk.
Freeware
Any software that is available free of charge that can be copied, used and distributed.
Graphics
Any computer device or program that makes a computer capable of displaying and editing pictures.
Malware
Malicious software. Software that is designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner’s informed consent.
Microsoft Windows
A control program for PCs that provides a graphical user interface (GUI), virtual memory management, multitasking and support for many peripheral devices.
Operating System
The software that controls the computer’s use of its hardware such as memory and disk storage space. Without it, no other program can be run.
Program
A set of instructions that are executed by a computer. Without programs computers are useless.
Plug and Play
The ability of a computer to automatically recognize and adjust the system configuration for a newly added device.
Shareware
A copyrighted software marketed under a “try before you buy” policy.
