Soft tissue infections and abscesses Flashcards
Clinical presentations local to the source (5):
Pain/tenderness Swelling Redness Temperature (increase) Loss of function
Give 3 systemic clinical presentations you might expect to find:
Fever
Sweats
Rigors
What is the most common site for soft tissue skin infection?
Lower leg (though any area can be affected)
What is erysipelas?
An intradermal infection
What are the 2 organisms likely responsible for causing erysipelas?
Group A beta haemolytic streptococcus
+/- Staphylococcus aureus
What are the 2 organisms likely responsible for causing cellulitis?
Group A beta haemolytic streptococcus
+/- Staphylococcus aureus
What are the 2 typical organisms that cause skin sepsis?
Group A beta haemolytic streptococcus
+/- Staphylococcus aureus
What groups of people may be more likely to develop an atypical skin sepsis?
Drug users
Immunocompromised people
Why/how are drug users more vulnerable to atypical infections?
Due to contaminated needles
Why/how are immunocompromised people more vulnerable to atypical infections?
As they have a lowered immune system leaving them vulnerable to infections by atypical or low virulence organisms - including fungi
What is cellulitis?
A subcutaneous infection
How is a subcutaneous infection acquired?
1) By a breach in the body defences (eczema, ulcers, insect bites, athlete’s foot, etc.)
2) Or by bloodstream spread (less likely)
What is an abscess?
A localised collection of infection
Name a microorganism that is known to cause skin and soft tissue abscesses?
Staphylococcus aureus
Name 4 microorganisms that are known to cause lung abscesses?
1) Staphylococcus aureus
2) Klebsiella pneumoniae
3) Anaerobic organisms
4) Mycobacterium tuberculosis
