sociology - theories Flashcards
Parsons - functional fit theory
what is the loss of functions?
- the functions the family performs depend on the society it is found in
- geographically mobile workforce which was created by the extended making way for neculer
- socially mobile workforce
when industrialisation happened the family lost many functions so the two essential functions = primary socialisation, stabilisation of adult personality
Murdock’s 4 functions
- satisfaction of the sex drive
- reproduction
- meeting the economic needs of members
- socialisation of the young
What did inherence of property cause?
marx? and engles?
what are the other 2 points Marxist argued to why capitalism occurred?
before industrialisation Marx says primitive consumerism existed where nobody owned private land or property and no restriction on sexual restriction which engles called promiscuous hude
but then a patriarchal monogamous neculer family emerged a group of men who wanted to give their wealth to their heir and therefore capitalism occurred
ideological belief, unit of consumption
critic of Marxist..?
assume all nuclear family is dominant in society. Feminist gender inequality is not addressed. Functionalist argue benefits of the nuclear family are ignored.
what are the three types of feminist’s
three points stated by liberal feminists? (including crtic as one reason)
Liberal, Marxist and feminist
- women’s oppression is being overcome through changes to attitudes through law
- belief that we will overcome full equality when laws are fully reformed and both sexes are equal
- critic from other feminist who criticise liberal feminist for failing to mention underlying reason to women’s oppression
three points from Marxist feminist to how family reinforce patriarchal?
main source of oppression of women is capitalism
- through unpaid domestic labour, socialising children
- women maintain anger, that would otherwise be directed at capitalism; Ainsley “takers of shit”
- women used for cheep labour when no longer needed they are thrown back to the life of unpaid labour
three points from radical feminist on how the family reinforce patriarchal?
key division in society is based on men and women
- men are the enemy; source of women’s oppression and exploitation
- marriage and the family are key instructions to the patriarchal society; men benefit from women’s DL and ss
- argue the only way to help this is through separateness
SOMERVELLE critic?
argues that women’s position has improved considerably with better access. She argues family friendly policies are needed such as flexible working hours
personal life perspective on the structural approaches (Marxist, feminists, functionalist)
- they tend to assume neculer family is the dominant family type (ignores FD over the last 50 years and individual choice)
- all structural approaches family members are passive puppets; (led by structure of society)
What is an example of beyond ties blood relationship?
- a women may not feel close to her own sister but a friend and may not be willing to help the sister in times of distress but the friend.
- includes; pets, dead relatives, friends, teachers
- focusing on meanings to relationship rather then blood
Norsdqat and smart on doner conceived children
- the issue on blood and genes raised issues, some parents felt close about blood children whereas others did not emphasise on genetic bond.
evaluation of personal life perspective
ignores the special bond of blood relations
