What is primary socialisation, and give three values it teaches?
Socialisation during the early years of childhood an takes place within the immediate family.
It can teach children these values:
-Communication
-Problem solving
-Respect for others
-Basic coordination
-Teamwork
What is gender socialisation and give an examples of sport it applies to.
The act of learning to conform to culturally defined gender roles through socialisation.
e.g. girls only playing netball
Give the three types of social control and give and example for each
Media- sexist towards female performers and concentrate on looks rather than performance
Religion- The church has promoted ‘muscular Christianity’, working class are asked to accept status quo and concentrate on being good Christians.
Education- Private school pupils have access to top facilities in sport and have more options in P.E that state schools do not.
What is social action theory?
getting more minority groups being able to play in order to prevent barriers to participation
Using Tennis as an example, explain how the social action theory can be put in place to improve opportunity for different minority groups.
Working class - free tennis lessons once a week for those with low income
Disabled - Increase in facilities and coaches for disability tennis.
Women - Female only slot at a tennis club
Ethnic-minority groups - inner city tennis courts
Define Prejudice
To form an unfavourable opinion of an individual, often based on inadequate facts
Define Discrimination
The unfair treatment of a person or a minority group
Define Stereotyping
Making simple generalisations about all members of a group.
Give an example of overt and covert discrimination.
overt- a coach giving verbal abuse to a player from an ethnic minority group every time that they make a mistake
Covert- a coach always substituting a player from an ethnic minority group, even when they are playing well
