The family
A group of people related to each other by blood, marriage or adoption
Society
a group of people who share a common way of life
Social groups
subgroups of people within society who share a common purpose eg. primary social goup eg family, secondary social group eg school
Kinship
a blood reltationship that exists between family members
Norms
the normal patterns of behaviour that individuals are expected to follow within societyV
Values
the attittdes and beliefs help by a society regarding what is right and wrong. These are reinforced by the laws of a country
Mores
the norms, values and customs that are considered important by society
Socialisation
the process whereby an individual learns appropriate norms, values, behaviour and social skills in order to behave in a manner acceptable to society. Achieved by primary socialisation and secondary socialisation
Culture
they way of life of a society, which includes language, music, customs, norms, values and skills, passed on from one generation to the next
Role
the expected pattern of behaviour of an individual according to their staus or position in society
Status
the position held by individuals relative to others within society. Often defined by the amount of respect and prestige shown to them by others.
Ascribed- given at birth
Achieved- gained through an individual’s own effort
Socio-economic grouping
the classification of individuals according to their economic and social postition in relation to others, based on income, education and occupation. In Ireland these groups are usually classified as: lower, middle and higher
Social mobility
the movement of individuals between socio-economic groupings. This may occur due to educational progression
Social Institutions
organised social arrangements found in many societies
Social Change
chnages that take place in society due to major developments. Example: changes in technology, national or international events,
law reform
