same as Henry VI, gentry, merchants, yoemen, husbandmen, cottagers and labourers and landlords and tenants- commoners lived off the land of noblemen were expected to be obedient to their landlord and then the noblemen would protect their tenants

- Monastries had often provided education for those who could afford it
- They also provided care for the sick and abbeys provided help for the poor
Impact of the dissolution on monks and nuns
- Had their vacations and homes taken
Nuns- couldnt marry but it was hard for nuns to earn enough money to live and they could not become priests
Amicable Grant 1525
- fund Henrys war in France but was met with hostility- people refused to pay and some rebelled
- it was abandoned and Henry made peace with them instead giving up his claim to the French throne

- Rumours about taxes and closing down churches triggered riots in 1536 in Lincolnshire
Pilgrimage of Grace
- Rebellion of 40,000 led by the gentry
-Issued demands including Mary to be restored to the succession, dismissal of Cromwell, stopping enclosure, Catholic Church to be restored to all its former rights
Aftermath of the Pilgrimage of Grace
- Henry pardoned the revels and said Parliament would look at their demands
Rebellions in the north in 1537 gave Henry the excuse he needed to execute the rebel leaders and go back on his word - removed hedges/fences which had been put up in some areas

- Exports of woolen items increased by 100%
-London became the centre of trade

- Henry did not think it was worthwhile to invest time and effort in the ‘New World’ and the government didnt encourage it

- Increasing demand for food, land and goods, leading to increased prices and rents

1540- reduced the amount of silver in coins making them less valuable and so more were needed to purchase things

- Poor harvests 1520-1521 and 1527-29
Efforts to stop enclosure
- Muddled Acts were passed in 1489 and 1515 to prevent enclosure
-Cromwell passed an act in 1534 designed to limit how many sheep an individual could own
Agriculture
- 90% of the population living off the land
Enclosure and engrossing
-Many people left rural areas
-1547- 3% was enclosure
Ill health
High death rate due to poor sanitation however it didnt effect the majority of the population as they lived in the countryside
