socila responsibility Flashcards
what did mrs Brilibg say in act 2 in reference to Evas pregnancy- what does this show?
“ill tell you what i told her, go look for the farther..its his responsibility - she looking for someone to blame thats not her or her family; trying to rid her name from this ‘scandel’ which is also implying that she believes the farther is no one she would know aka not her class; upper class is to good and well put together and would make bad decisions: only assume this from her class woukd implies the highly prejudiced views mrs B has
what does mrs B say about the situation eva got into in act 2 and what does this say about mrs B?
“im very sorry… she has no one to blame but herself “ shes trying to be perceived as a good person but really she is just deflecting and rejecting any responsibility
what is Mr B view on community that he shows during his speech in act 1 before the inspector arrives?
“ a man has to mind his own business and look after himself” he also talk about the concept of socialism and community is “all nonsense” this shows Mr B arrogance and emphasis the lack of awareness he has for the need for change this is also a very capitalist and upper class view and its intentionally stated before the inspector arrives as the inspectors interrupts these views with his socialist ones. This interruption represents how Mr balance do use a knife. I interrupted by the inspectors socialist messages
what statement does the inspector say just before he leaves the birlings in act 3 ?
“we are members of one body, we are responsible for each other” this is the last thing the inspector says before leaving so has a dramatic affect and makes a clear statement to the audience of the purpose of the inspectors visit and the message he ,and therefore preisly is projecting, as inspectors is his mouthpiece. It also is clear of Priestley’s socialist views. Also the fact, the first thing that the inspector did was interrupt Mr Birling’s capitalist views and arrogant speech and the last thing he did was leave the family with a very socialist statement emphasises Preislys message that changes necessary.
