he starts of the play by describing the dining room, the Burling is a city in Stating ‘It was filled with good solid furniture of the period’
what does it implied by the favt Eva smith is never shown
Eva Smith is never seen this represents how classes don’t mix also provides less context and creates more of a mystery around Eva Smith who she was and how she died
Every character has the power to help Eva Smith all involved in various different situations relating to her. What does this represent?
Shows how there is an irresponsible use of power in every aspect of society and shows how the upper classes priorities and not where they should be. Also the fact there are multiple scenarios sparks debate and multiple interest allowing for a deeper and more emotional connection with the audience.
why is it useful that the place it in 1912?
priestly is allowing his characters to tell the future incorrectly showing how just because someone has money, there not always correct. All the events mentioned in the play, a very culturally and politically important; by all the comments relevant to these historical moments being incorrect, it creates a automatic distrust and also discredits. Anything said by characters that made those statements
what did Priestly use Mrs Burling and Sheila to represent?
they were used to show the difference between generational political and social views. In 1912, women and men rights were very unequal, the suffragette movement was entering a slightly more violent stage, involving many riots, so highlights the role of women in society through Sheila Burling and Mrs Burling to make a point.
