Socially sensitive Flashcards
social psychology : Prejudice & Discrimination
Social psychology explores stereotyping, prejudice, and obedience, which can be misused or misinterpreted.
Example: Milgram (1963) showed how people obey authority even when harming others. Some argue this research could justify war crimes by excusing soldiers’ behaviour as “following orders.”
Real-World Application: Reducing Discrimination
Sherif’s Robbers Cave Study (1954) showed how group conflict leads to prejudice but can be reduced through superordinate goals (cooperation).
Benefit: This research informs anti-discrimination policies.
Risk: If misapplied, it could be used to manipulate group behaviour (e.g., government control).
social psychology : social Influence & Manipulation social psychology :
Studies on conformity (Asch, 1951) and minority influence (Moscovici, 1969) can be used for social change but may also lead to manipulation.
Example: Governments or media could use persuasion techniques to control public opinions.
