Socialisation Flashcards
How did Parsons define socialisation
- process by which humans learn and internalise their cultures norms and values
- people learn specific beliefs and forms of behaviour appropriate to their cultures so their society becomes part of their personality development
Outline the stages of socialisation
Primary, secondary, tertiary
Define primary socialisation
- When a child learns from immediate family in the home
- they adopt the beliefs and values of the family and learns the expectations the parents have of the child
Define secondary socialisation
- when a child learns what a society expects of its members
- generally takes place outside the home
- e.f friendship groups, education, the mass media, religious organisations
Define tertiary socialisation
Adult socialisation that takes place when people need to adapt to new situations such as becoming a parent, changing jobs or coping with illness
What are the two elements of socialisation
Formal, informal
Define formal socialisation
Processes where people are deliberately and consciously manipulated to ensure they learn how to follow certain rules
E.g in education
Define informal socialisation
When people learn to fit into their culture by watching and learning from others around them
Define agencies of socialisation
Any group or organisation that passes on cultural norms and values to others e.g the family, education, mass media, religious organisations
Outline the aims of socialisation within the family
- to have the ability to do certain things such as reading and swimming
- the desire to achieve ambitions
- the ability to survive in the outside world and avoid danger
- to learn social roles
