Primary socialisation: learn to eat, walk and talk from our parents. Learn to love, care. Right and wrong behaviour. Interests and hobbies. Personality traits.
What is media?
Secondary socialisation: learn about the world/news. Keep in close contact with people.
What is education?
Secondary socialisation: learn rules set out by school/college. Hidden curriculum. Responsibilities.
What is peer groups?
Secondary socialisation: coming out of your comfort zone. Meeting new people. Slang, trust, loyalty.
What is workplace?
Secondary socialisation: communicating with others. Teamwork. Value of money. Responsibilities.
What is religion?
Secondary socialisation: respect for others religion. Morals, faith, beliefs. Way we see the world. Attitudes towards certain laws.
What is formal agents of socialisation?
Enforced laws that everyone follows the same rules
Examples of formal agents.
Police, law system, courts, government
What is informal agents of socialisation?
Rules varies which can’t be enforced.
Examples of informal agents.
Family, peer groups, media, religion, education, workplace
What is social control?
Process of persuading or forcing individuals to conform to norms and values. Can be informal and formal.
Examples of processes of social control.
Imitation, official rules, sanctions, peer pressure, praise, stereotyping, inclusion/exclusion.
