what is socialisation
the process of learning norms and values in a society
what are values
values are what is considered worth working for in society; things that are important
what are norms
expected but unwritten rules about how people should behave in society
what is culture
the shared way of life of a society, or group within society
what is society
a society is a group of people who share common territory and culture and who interact with each other
what is the hidden curriculum in education
the messages in norms and values that are passed on without students realising it
what is achieved status
status that is earned, e.g. by getting a particular job
what is ascribed status
status you are born with, e.g. royalty
what is the formal curriculum in education
subjects that students are taught and what they learn in those subjects

the idea that behaviour is learned. individuals are socialised into their culture by agents of socialisation

the idea that our behaviour is mostly determined by our genetics, we inherit it from our parents
