What is a discourse?
Discourses are ongoing discussions or debates about an idea or social value. Discourse also refers to the creation of meaning through the relationship between texts, audience and media organisations in society.
What is a social value?
Social values are attitudes towards a discourse that a society has at a particular place and time. Social values can remain in a society over a number of years and generally change or evolve.
What is a social issue?
A social issue can be thought of as a concrete expression of a discourse or social value. A social issues is linked to a specific place and time. Whole discourses and social values may exist as abstract concepts, social issues can be seen in the fabric of a society.
What is a dominant social value?
A dominant social value is when most people in a society hold the same social value.
What is an emerging social value?
An emerging social value is when a new social value emerges against or alongside a dominant social value.
What is an oppositional social value?
An oppositional social value is strongly positioned against a dominant social value and discourse.
