When two or more culture come into contact with each other
Colonialism?
Setting up colonies for your main country, while exploring and maintaining that place.
Displacement?
When a group of people are moved.
Exploitation?
Taking advantage of resources or people.
Mercantilism?
Trade that is controlled by the ruling power.
Eurocentrism?
Similar to ethnocentrism but only applies to Europeans
Legacy?
Something that is passed on from generation to generation.
Ethnocentrism?
When one group of people think that are more important than others.
White mans burden?
The thought that white people had to take responsibility of other races.
What does the case study “21st century white mans burden” talk about?
Talks about the similarities between the poem white mans burden, and how the USA went into Iraq after 9/11 to help the Iranians from their own government.
The catch is that the Iranians didn’t ask for help.
What is social Darwinism?
Darwinism is the law of natural selection.
Social Darwinism applies that law to humans and races.
Only the strong race prevail.
White people are usually presumed as the strong.
What was the Berlin conference?
In 1884 leader from different countries got together to discuss dividing Africa.
They didn’t want to start a war.
Even though 80% of Africa was still under local control. (Indigenous)
What does the case study “ the price of precious” talk about?
Talks about the situation in the Congo.
Mining in the Congo is done by slave labour and in poor working conditions.
The Congo’s government is corrupt and is benefiting from the mining .
The country is war torn.
What happened with the First Nations genocide in Canada?
Right now the UN doesn’t recognize that Canada has committed a genocide against he FNP.
Residential school were schools that FN children were forced into.
Their was abuse and many deaths in the schools.
The kids that attended were part of a cultural genocide.
What is the agricultural revolution?
It was at the same time as the industrial revolution except it was with farming.
Nw machines made agricultural work easier.
What was the industrial revolution?
New technology made work easier and more productive.
These new machines included… The spinning wheel, which spun cotton into thread and then into cloth.
Brought an overall improvement to living standards.
Factory cruelty was a problem.
The factories were the cause of a lot of air pollution.
