What were bands?
Bands were subgroups within a tribe.
In most cases people in a particular band were related to one another.
Devotion to the survival of the overall band instead of just individuals within it was most important.
What were Chiefs?
Wise and successful warriors that were chosen.
Chiefs led the decision-making process about where bands should travel to.
What were the tribes and councils?
Tribal links connected bands to one another.
Bands came together each year in tribal meetings.
Tribal chiefs were advised by band chiefs and elders who came together in tribal councils.
What were the warrior societies?
Within each band, hunting was governed by the warrior society.
This ‘society’ consisted of the best warriors in the band.
How was decision making decided?
Decision-making was collective.
Everyone on the council had to consent to any decision made.
Anyone in the tribe who disagreed with the decision could follow their own path.
Plain Indians spirituality and visions often informed their decisions.
What were gender roles like?
Men were responsible for protecting the tribe and hunting for food. (Known as braves)
Woman looked after the home and fed the family they also made clothing. (Known as squaws)
Both parents and other members of the tribe participated in child care.
What happened to the elders once they could no longer contribute to society?
They were left to die of protecting them risk to the tribes ability to survive.
