Albrecht, 8 week programme to help pregnant adolescents resist peer pressure to smoke, slightly older mentor, those with a buddy significantly less likely to smoke than those without, supports SS as buddy acts as an Ally, gave ppts confidence to resist, useful explanation as can be used in real world
Weakness: criticism of social support
Other factors may affect likelihood of resisting social influence, credibility of ally, model not seen as credible, individual won’t identify with them, less likely to join them in resisting, dissenter in Asch’s variations had poor eyesight, resistance levels dropped significantly, SS more complex, lowers validity
Strength: RTS in Milgram’s study
Resisting pressures to obey, in one variation one real ppt was paired with two confederates who also acted as teachers, the two refused to go on and withdrew, total people shocking to 450v dropped to 10%, supports SS as shows if ppt had SS more likely to resist
