Some are in the Bill of Rights, while others were added in later amendments to the Constitution
What are some examples of Constitutional amendments that added new rights and changed the nation?
The 13th Amendment ended slavery, which was legal under the original Constitution
The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote
The 26th Amendment gave everyone over 18 the right to vote
What are some important responsibilities of citizens?
Vote.
Obey the laws.
Pay taxes.
Take part in their community.
For younger citizens to go to school.
Treat others with respect, including people who are different from us.
Why is voting an important responsibility in a democracy?
A democracy depends on its citizens to select their representatives to the government. It’s an important responsibility for citizens to learn about candidates and to vote for they think should represent them. It’s difficult for democracy to work without citizens being responsible for voting.
What are taxes used for?
Governments collect taxes and then spend the proceeds on important public services such as schools, police, parks, roads and the courts.
What are some holidays that allow people to express their patriotism?
Independence Day.
Martin Luther King Day.
Veterans Day.
Memorial Day.
Presidents’ Day.
What are some symbols of patrotism?
The American flag.
The Great Seal.
The Pledge of Allegiance.
The National Anthem.
