Science: Vocabulary Flashcards
Structure
Organized parts that work together to help an organism survive
External
On the outside
Internal
On the inside
Function
The job that structure does as part of an organism
Ovary
The female reproductive part of a flower that produces eggs and a place for seeds to develop
Stoma (stomata)
Tiny openings on a leaf that take in carbon dioxide from the air and release other gases from the plant
Vascular System
A collection of small tubes that transports, or carries, materials up, down and through a plant
Xylem and Phloem
Vascular structures in plants
Xylem moves water from roots to leaves
Phloem moves sugars from leaves to all parts of the plant
Cuticle
A waxy outer covering on leaves
Classify
To put something into a group of like things
Pistil
Part of a flower that contains the female reproductive parts
Stamen
The male part of a flower that makes pollen, the male reproductive cell
Sepal
Protects a budding flower by wrapping around it
Skeleton
A rigid support system that includes bones that connect the soft structures of the body
Heart
An internal organ that pumps blood
Lungs
An internal organ that provides oxygen to the blood and takes carbon dioxide from the blood
Gills
Organs found in fish that extract oxygen from the water as water flows around the gills
Brain
The structure that receives information about an animal’s environment
Interpret
To figure out the meaning of something
Exoskeleton
A hard external covering that is waterproof and protects the soft body underneath
Characteristic
A quality, trait or character of something
Stimulus
A nerve signal that is sent to the brain where the signal is interpreted
Organ Sytem
A group of organs that work together to do a particular job
Organ
Body parts that perform specific functions
Tissue
A group of cells of the same kind that have a specific function
Diaphram
The muscle located below the lungs that causes air to flow in and out of the lungs
Skeletal Sytem
The system of 206 bones in the human body
Muscles
Organs that contract, or shorten, or relax, or lengthen, to move bones
Extend
To straighten out
Skin
The largest organ in the human body that covers and protects the internal organs
Sensory Organs
Organs that connect the outside world by gathering specific kinds of information
Stimulus
An action or change that causes certain reactions
Response
The body’s reaction to a stimulus
Extinct
The death of all organisms in a species
Liver
An organ that breaks down fats
Small intestine
The organ where most digestion occurs
Large intestine
The organ that absorbs water
Pancreas
The organ that adjusts sugar levels in the body
Stomach
An organ that helps break down food before digestion
Connect
To attach two parts together
Kidneys
A pair of bean shaped organs that filter waste from the blood
Bladder
A muscular sac that stores urine until it is released from the body
Respiratory system
A system that exchanges oxygen and CO2 between the air and the body through the lungs
Circulatory system
A system where blood, pumped by the heart, moves oxygen, sugar, water and waste around the body
Skeletal system
Bones that support the body, protect the organs, and give muscles something to pull on
Muscular system
Muscle pull on the bones and move the body around
Nervous system
The brain interprets information from sensory organs and tells muscles and organs what to do
Digestive system
Breaks down food and takes out the water and nutrients to put into the blood to send around the body
Excretory system
The organ system that removes wastes from the body
