Social Studies: Regions of the U.S. Flashcards
How many regions are there in the U.S.? What are they?
There are 5: the Northeast, the Southeast, the Midwest, the Southwest, and the West
What is a region?
A region is an area that has places with similar geographic features
What is a landform?
A natural feature of the earth’s surface
What is a mesa
A flat topped landform with slopes on all sides
What is a plateau?
A large, flat, raised area of land
What is a canyon
A deep valley with steep, rocky walls

What is varied?
Different or changed
How are lakes different from oceans?
Most lakes have fresh water, while oceans have salty water
What are some landforms that are found in the U.S.?
Mountains, mesas, plateaus, canyons, flood plains, beaches, dunes, plains
What are some characteristics of the Northeast Region?
There are forests and hills. The soil is rocky, but further south and west, the soil is good for farming. The Appalachian Mountains runs through this region.
What are some characteristics of the Southeast Region
This region has low coastal plains along the Atlantic Coast and Gulf of Mexico Coast. The Appalachian Mountains also runs through this region.
What are some characteristics of the Midwest Region?
This region is known for broad grassy plains, forests and rolling hills. Major rivers also run through this region, such as the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio Rivers.
What are some characteristics of the Southwest Region?
There are low coastal areas, dry plains, canyons and deserts. One of the best known landforms in this region is the Grand Canyon, formed by the Colorado River over millions of years.
What are some characteristics of the West Region?
It is the largest and most varied region. There are forests, rich soil for farming, and a long coast. Its landforms has plains and mountains. Both the nation’s highest (Mount McKinley in Alaska) and lowest (Death Valley in California) points are found in this region.
Which region has the highest population? Which region has the lowest?
Southeast Region has the highest population, and the Southwest Region has the lowest.
What are boundaries?
A line that divides one area or state from another
Why are some boundaries straight lines, while others are curved or irregular?
Some boundaries for cities, states and countries are set by law, so they are straight. But other boundaries such as regional boundaries follow natural features such as rivers, and thus they are irregular.
What causes people to live close to each other, or far from each other?
There could be several reasons such as what jobs people have. For example, farmers live far from cities because they need land to raise animals or grow crops, while office workers live in cities because many office buildings are there.
Landforms also play a part, for example fewer people live in deserts or mountainous regions.
Name one state in reach region.
Northeast: Maine, Vermont, New York
Southeast: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina
Midwest: Michigan, Ohio, Illinois
Southwest: Texas, New Mexico, Arizona
West: California, Oregon, Alaska
