What is the parliament?
England’s bicameral (two-house) legislature (lawmaking body)
made up of the House of Lords and the House of Commons; the Prime Minister
is in charge of Parliament
What is Great Britain?
an island made up of the countries of England, Wales, and Scotland
What is the United Kingdom?
Great Britain and Ireland (at this time)
Mercantilism
A system of creating and maintaining wealth through carefully controlled trade. England controlled the colonies for wealth
What are Imports?
goods brought into a country; a country gains wealth if it has more exports than imports
What are exports?
Goods sold to other countries; a country gains wealth if it has more exports than imports
What are Duties?
Taxes added to imported items
What is smuggling?
illegal trading of goods
What was the Navigation Act of 1660?
Parliament passed a series of acts that forbade colonists from trading specific items such as sugar and cotton with any country other than England; colonists also were forced to use England ships.
What was the Molasses Act of 1733?
Parliament passed an act which placed duties of sugar, molasses, and rum; British officials rarely carried out this law.
What are free Enterprises?
businesses conducted with little or no interference from the government
What are raw materials?
unfinished or unprocessed goods ( leather, wood)
What are manufactured good?
finished or processed products (clothes, furniture)
What was triangular trade?
raw materials and manufactured goods were traded between the colonies, West Indies, Europe, and Africa; Slaves were traded as well from Africa across the Atlantic ( Middle Passage) because they were considered property/ chattel.
What is a boycott?
to refuse to buy a good or service; a nonviolent form of protest
What is a repeal?
to cancel or to take back
What is a militia?
civilians (non-military people) serving as soldiers
What is a propaganda?
a story/art which gives only one side of an argument or issue
What is a massacre?
a slaughter/killing of people or animals
What is a retreat?
to turn away from the fighting in a battle; whoever is still on the field is the winner/victor/ and can claim victory
What is quartering?
housing or lodging for the soldiers/military
What is coercive?
forceful
What is intolerable?
unbearable
What is a smuggle?
bring goods into a country illegally
