Labour discipline was harsh in factories and conditions were dirty and dangerous

Factory canteens provided meals for workers
Vaccines for Malaria made universally available from 1947
Problems with Stalins welfare
Peasants benefited much less = no rations entitlement
Food major problem = work canteens used rotten food, animal feed led to illness
Sanitation in factories inadequate, lice infestations and vomitting
What was Housing like?
Soviet authorities redistributed housing, taken from rich aristocrats to poor people
Urban housing divided into Kommunalka (apartments) Entire families would live in a room
Dormitories to house factory workers in new factory towns, in Moscow coal Fields 15,000 beds for 26,000 workers
